Pointers walk off to top Eagles in softball split
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Bre Ellison hit a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the fifth of a 9-1 game two win to give the UW-Stevens Point softball team a split against UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at McCarty Memorial Field.
UW-La Crosse 10, UW-Stevens Point 7
The Eagles (19-9, 7-5 WIAC) took game one despite being outhit 15-12 by taking advantage of five errors by UW-Stevens Point (11-20, 2-12 WIAC). Emilie Wiltzius led the way for UW-La Crosse by going 4-for-4 with a home run, two runs and three RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles scored in each of the last six innings. UW-La Crosse scored three times in the second and three in the sixth as they built a 10-4 lead.
Paige Meulemans (Appleton, WI/Kimberly) was 4-for-5 for the Pointers and drove in four runs. Meulemans hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit in half, her second straight day with a home run.
UW-Stevens Point 9, UW-La Crosse 1 (5 inn.)
The Pointers got off to a quick start by scoring five runs in the first inning and Ellison capped the eight-run win with the game-winning double in the bottom of the fifth.
After UW-La Crosse started the scoring in the first, UW-Stevens Point capitalized on three Eagles errors in the home half of the frame to take a 5-1 lead. Meulemans singled in the first run of the inning, Abbey Zortman (Waterford, WI/Waterford) added a two-run double and the Pointers added two more on a pair of errors.
Miranda Morrison (Madison, WI/East) held UW-La Crosse in check after the first inning and picked up her fifth win of the season by going all five innings. The freshman gave up one run on six hits and recorded two strikeouts.
The Pointers wrapped up the win with three runs in the fifth. Meulemans started the inning with a double, raising her season average to .398, and later scored on a single by Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna). Ellison followed Schreiner with a two-run double to cap the walk-off win.
In its third doubleheader in as many days, UW-Stevens Point takes on UW-Superior at home on Thursday, April 24 at 3 p.m.
