Pointers’ baseball team sweep twinbill at Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. -A pair of pitching gems by Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran) and Luke Watson (Appleton, WI/Xavier) along with timely hitting gave the UW-Stevens Point baseball team a pair of victories over UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 7-5 and 11-0 in five innings.

UW-Stevens Point 7 – UW-Oshkosh 5

Scoreless through three, the host Titans got on the board first in the home half of the fourth, plating three runs in the frame thanks in part to a two-out single by Zac Peterson.

The Pointers responded in the fifth with four runs capped by a two out triple by Kyle McHugh (Polonia, WI/Rosholt) , putting UWSP in front.

The Titans evened the score in the bottom of the seventh when Peterson came around to score after a leadoff double.

Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) put UWSP in front for good in the eighth, sending a two-out offering towering over the left field wall for a two-run home run, his first of the season. Taylor Carlson (Madison, WI/LaFollette) later came around to score to cap a three run frame.

UWO plated one run in the home half of the eighth but it was not enough as Seidl and the Pointers defense shut the door to seal the victory.

Seidl improved to 5-0 on the season, pitching his third complete game in seven appearances. He struck out eight and scattered 14 hits.

UW-Stevens Point 11 – UW-Oshkosh 0 (7 inn.)

The Pointers struck early and often in game two, taking an early 2-0 lead thanks to a Brandon Kranz (Waukesha, WI/West) two-run shot in the top of the first off UWO starter Ben Messenger (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port).

The Pointers tacked on another run in the second and three more in the third including a solo home run by Harry Steldt (West Bend, WI/West) and a two-run double by McHugh.

Four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run triple and a two-run single by Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) and Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) put the Pointers in front for good and providing the offense needed to end the game via the run rule.

Watson earned the victory, his fifth of the season scattering just two hits, striking out four to keep his record unblemished. Nick Prebelski (Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame) came in to pitch a scoreless seventh.

The Pointers (20-7, 8-6 WIAC) return home to close out the home portion of their schedule with a four game set against UW-Platteville Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27. Games both days are scheduled for 12 p.m. starts.
