Rodgers Limited In Practice

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith said Wednesday that he’s preparing his team to face Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

For that to happen, the Green Bay Packers quarterback may have to practice without any limitations by Friday.

Rodgers could not do that on Wednesday, although he did take part in all the individual drills.

“Basically, he did everything that he was cleared to do medically,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “I mean, he’s obviously not cleared, so he was in a rehab mode. I thought he looked good for what they asked him to do. [He] did everything seamlessly.”

Tests administered Tuesday on Rodgers’ broken left collarbone did not show enough progress for team doctors to clear him for game action and no further X-rays or scans are scheduled, meaning it might be difficult for Rodgers to get cleared by the end of the week.

“It’s a medical decision,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “There were three parts to it: the strength, the range of motion and the evidence that we see on the scan. Two out of the three are passed so far.”

Matt Flynn, who started last Thursday’s 40-10 loss at the Detroit Lions, took the starter’s reps in practice Wednesday. However, Flynn said he could not be certain whether he would start against the Falcons because he wouldn’t count out Rodgers yet.

Flynn has been in this position before. In 2008, he prepared to start against the Falcons after Rodgers sprained his right shoulder in the previous game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I took every practice rep [in practice that week], and they told me I think an hour and a half before the game that Aaron was going to play,” Flynn said. “You can never tell with that guy. We’ll see. I know he’s doing everything he can and wants to be out there so bad.”

Perhaps that’s why Smith said during a conference call with reporters at Lambeau Field that he was preparing for Rodgers.

“We’re anticipating that he’s going to play this week,” Smith said. “I know there was information that came out yesterday that said he wasn’t cleared, but he’s not been ruled out. We’re taking that that he’s playing. That’s what our preparation has got to be.”

However, Rodgers said it would not be a game-time decision.

“No, I don’t think that’s fair to Matt if we do that,” Rodgers said. “I think by Friday or Saturday at the latest, there will be a decision.”
