For now it’s Matt Flynn over Scott Tolzien if Rodgers can’t go on Sunday

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Matt Flynn’s experience is worth more now to the Green Bay Packers than Scott Tolzien’s potential.
That was essentially coach Mike McCarthy’s explanation for why Flynn would take the starter’s reps in practice on Wednesday, when the Packers begin preparations for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Though McCarthy has not ruled out Aaron Rodgers, he said Tuesday that the team’s medical staff has not cleared Rodgers for game action yet.
If nothing changes by the end of the week, Flynn is expected to make his second straight start.
“We just think Matt’s further along as far as game experience and just a little more comfortable in the system,” McCarthy said.
As we pointed out earlier on Tuesday when we debated Flynn vs. Tolzien, Flynn’s experience in the Packers’ system, in which he was a backup from 2008-11, did not help him in Thursday’s 40-10 loss at the Detroit Lions.
However, with the Packers playing at Lambeau Field on Sunday, perhaps they can better use Flynn’s ability to run the no-huddle offense, like they did when he came on in relief of Tolzien in the Nov. 26 tie against the Minnesota Vikings. It’s much easier to operate the no-huddle at home, where crowd noise is not a factor.
Also, Flynn had only two abbreviated practices, totaling about 90 minutes, last week to get ready for the Thanksgiving game against the Lions.
“This will be Matt’s first opportunity to get a full week of reps, getting ready for the Atlanta game,” McCarthy said. “That’s what you have to look at. Talking even with Aaron today about trying to maybe get him ready also to get him a chance to come back is, how do you balance that out? Because at the end of the day, we have to make sure our quarterback is ready to play.”
