State wrestling: Baine becomes first West multi-state champ while Nowak twins win for Edgar and Schmidt for Merrill
Colin Baine made some Wausau West history on Saturday as the Warrior senior became the first West wrestler to win more than one state individual title with a 8-2 decision over Merrill’s Garrett Schmelling at 126 pounds at the Kohl Center. Baine finishes the year at 50-0 and becomes West’s first undefeated state champ. Teammate Joe Umlauf came up just short in his attempt at a perfect season at 132 pounds but lost to Arrowhead’s Andrew Crone 7-2 in the state final.
Merrill had one state title in Division 1 as junior Tyler Schmidt finishes an undefeated 45-0 season with a 6-1 win over Dakota Johnson of Elkhorn.
A big day for Edgar wrestlers in Division 3. Luke Nowak, Matt Nowak, and Devin Lemanski all won state title for the Wildcats.
