Pointer women win at Oshkosh to advance to WIAC title game
OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball team became the first team this season to defeat Oshkosh on its home floor Friday evening, ending the Titans season with a 59-50 victory in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal.
The Titans led for majority of the first half, building its largest lead of seven points midway through the half. Oshkosh took a 26-24 lead into the break, marking just the sixth time this season the Pointers have trailed at the half.
The Pointers came out on fire in the second half to take the 30-29 lead three minutes in and they never trailed again.
UWSP built its lead to as many as 16 points, which came when Liz Althoff (Darien, WI/Clinton) knocked down a pair of free throws to take the 48-32 lead.
Althoff posted a game-high 21 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the field and 8-for-11 from the charity stripe.
Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) was right behind her with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Megan Wenig led the Titans with 20 points.
UWSP (22-5) will travel to UW-Whitewater on Sunday, Feb. 24 to take on the Warhawks for the WIAC Tournament Championship and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Tip-off set for 2 p.m.
