Hockey: Storm girls, West and Rapids boys look to earn state trips in sectional finals
It’s the sectional finals tonight and tomorrow in high school hockey as boys and girls teams look to punch their tickets to Madison and next week’s state tournament. On the girls’ side, the defending state champion Central Wisconsin Storm faces Northland Pines in a rematch of a tight sectional final from one year ago. Tonight’s game will be played at Sara Park in Tomahawk, a late change in location from Wisconsin Rapids. The Storm have lost just one game all season and look to make it six straight trips to Madison. Tonight’s game can be heard on 1230 The Voice and 1230wxco.com starting with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m.
The Wisconsin Rapids boys’ hockey team looks to win a sectional championship tonight in Wisconsin Dells as the Red Raiders meet West Salem/Bangor. The Red Raiders, the #1 seed who finished fourth in the Wisconsin Valley Conference this season, comes off two postseason shutouts with goalie Tyler Gilbert stopping all 47 shots he has faced in the playoffs. Tonight’s game faces off at 7 p.m.
Tomorrow afternoon a great match-up in Stevens Point as the SPASH Panthers host the Wausau West Warriors in a sectional final. SPASH and West split a pair of games in the regular season with West winning at home 1-0 in overtime in January and SPASH winning on their home ice 2-0 just a couple of weeks ago. SPASH is ranked third in the state while West is 8th. The Warriors are looking for a fourth straight sectional title and have advanced to the state title game each of the last three years with a state championship in 2011. SPASH hasn’t made state since 2008. The game features two of the top goalies in the state in the Warriors’ Sam Wiegert and the Panthers’ Nathan Siclovan. Saturday’s West-SPASH sectional final can be heard on 1230 The Voice and 1230wxco.com starting with the pregame show at 1:30 and the opening face-off at 2 p.m.
