UWSP women’s basketball team overcomes slow start and beats UWEC on senior day
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball team overcame a 30-29 halftime deficit Saturday evening to close out the regular season with a win over the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire, 66-55.
The Blugolds led the Pointers for all but the first three minutes of the first half, building their largest lead to nine points with six minutes to play.
The Pointers chipped away to come within one point heading into the break as Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) rolled in a layup with 16 seconds left .
Just seconds into the second half Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) knocked down a 3-pointer to give UWSP its first lead in 17 minutes, and it would never trail again, building a lead to as high as 19 points.
Barber led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Liz Althoff (Darien, WI/Clinton) posted 15 points in the win, also grabbing five rebounds and three steals.
Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) posted her first career double-double as she tallied 13 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Courtney Lewis led the Blugolds with 11 points.
The Pointers close out the regular season at 20-5, 12-4 WIAC, and await their seeding for the WIAC Tournament which will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 20
