Girls’ BB: Assumption rallies past Marathon to stay perfect while Newman rolls past Stratford plus other action

In a first-place showdown in the Marawood-South, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption uses a late rally to edge Marathon 38-33 in a game heard on Sports Fan 100.5. The Raiders led midway through the fourth quarter but Assumption finished fast to improve to 16-0 overall and 9-0 in the conference. Gina Grundhoffer had 13 points and Mary Sigler 10 for the Royals. Marathon falls to 14-2 overall and 7-2 in the league with both losses coming to Assumption. Natasha Hanke had 11 points for the Red Raiders.

A fast start helps Newman Catholic get back on the winning track with a 68-48 win at Stratford. The Cardinals offense came alive in the first half and led 41-25 at the break. Chole Chapman had 20 points and 9 rebounds for Newman while Christina Grunow and Kim Steif each added 11 points as Newman moves to 9-6 overall and 5-3 overall. Brooke Schultze had 17 points and Hannah Schmitt 14 for Stratford.

Edgar used a fast start to roll past Northland Lutheran 63-36. Edgar led 21-7 after the first quarter and 38-14 at halftime. Holly Denfeld had 22 points and 10 rebounds for Edgar, while Morgan Thums led Northland with 11 points and five rebounds.

Athens earns a big Marawood-North win at Abbotsford 65-57. The Blue Jays used a 39-26 edge over the middle two quarters to take a 51-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter and were able to withstand a 22-14 Falcon edge over the final eight minutes. Kyncaide Diedrich had 18 points and 8 rebounds for Athens while Casie Hieronimus added 12 and Lexy Belter 10. Abbotsford got 20 points from Kim Lecheler and 18 from Brooklyn Gunderson.
