HS hockey: West overcomes slow start to beat Marshfield, SPASH uses big third period to rally past DCE plus other action
Wausau West stays atop the Wisconsin Valley Conference after overcoming a slow start to beat Marshfield 6-1 on Thursday night. Zach Leggon scored at :32 of the first period to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead they would take into the first intermission. However, West would score three times in both the second and third periods to pull away for the win. Andrew Lee and Zach Peterson each had two goals while Cale Bowman and Tanner Gould also had goals for the Warriors. West improves to 7-0 in the WVC and 11-3-1 overall heading into a home game tonight against 9th ranked Superior.
Stevens Point stays right behind West in the WVC standings after scoring three goals in the third period to rally past D. C. Everest 3-1 at the K.B. Willett Arena. Chris Babiarz scored at 4:10 of the first period to give the Evergreens a 1-0 lead that held up until Austin Haas tied it up at 5:08 of the third for SPASH. Haas then gave the Panthers the lead at 10:48. Mason Czaikowski added some insurance with a goal at 12:17 of the third. Andy Mahler made 25 saves for DCE, who fell to 6-3 in the WVC and 12-6 overall. Stevens Point is now 7-1 in the conference and 15-3-1 overall.
Mosinee falls to Wisconsin Rapids 7-4. The Red Raiders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and cruised to the win. Luc Kreuser had four goals for Rapids while Brodey Pecha scored twice for Mosinee.
Wausau East earns their first WVC win of the season with a 10-0 win at Merrill.
