Injury to Sladek tough blow for surprising Blue Jays
A year ago Renee Sladek was a unanimous pick to the all-Wisconsin Valley Conference girls’ basketball 1st team as a sophomore. Despite having that target on her back, Sladek’s junior campaign was lining up as even better for her and her Merrill team as the Blue Jays are one of the surprises in the area being tied with DC Everest and SPASH at 4-1 atop the WVC. However, all of that changed Tuesday night in the first quarter of the Blue Jays’ win over Wausau East as Sladek went down with a knee injury and didn’t return to the game….in fact she was on crutches as her team beat the Lumberjacks 41-23.
The Wausau Daily Herald reported today that Sladek will be having an MRI done on her knee today with the results coming tomorrow. The hope is the news is good but often it isn’t….with torn ligaments and surgery a possibility. While it’s a shame for Merrill’s conference title hopes and for fans of outstanding basketball that Sladek is out at least temporarily, the biggest hurt is for Renee herself. Here’s hoping the MRI brings good news but even if it doesn’t, lets have all fans send out positive thoughts to an outstanding athlete who will hope to see back at her best very soon! Also best of luck to that surprising Merrill team that will face a big test at Marshfield on Friday without their best player…..but the supporting cast has been a major factor in Merrill’s surprising run. They have rose to the occasion in the second half of big wins against Wausau West and SPASH already and it wouldn’t be smart to count them out.
