Girls’ BB: Marathon knocks off #3 O-W while Athens edges S-B
The Marathon girls’ basketball team extends their win streak to 7 after beating D-5 #3 Owen-Withee 52-39 Monday night in a game heard on Sports Fan 100.5. Brianna Wirkus scored 15 points, including 11 in the second half to lead the Red Raiders, who are ranked 9th in the state Division 4 poll. Natasha Hanke added 11 points for Marathon, who improves to 11-1 on the season with the win. Owen-Withee got 12 points from Bailey Karaba but were hurt by the absence of senior forward Aleyna Goerlitz. Goerlitz, who averages more than 13 points per game, didn’t play after suffering an injury in practice. The Blackhawks had a 9 game win streak snapped and fell to 9-2 on the season.
A huge night for Kyncaide Diedrich helps Athens edge Stanley-Boyd 66-62. Diedrich scored 31 points and also had 8 steals. Savannah Jane and Vanessa Frahm each scored 11 points to help Athens improve to 9-4.
