Boys’ BB: Newman boys roll past Phillips while Northland Lutheran and Edgar also win plus other action

The Newman Catholic boys’ basketball team got off to a fast start and never slowed down in a 78-47 win over Phillips in a game heard on 1230 The Voice and 1230wxco.com. Newman led 21-10 after the first quarter and 25-6 at halftime behind 8 three-pointers in the first half. Sophomore Nick Thoreson hit four triples and scored 20 points. Marcus Gabriel added 18 points, Tolga Ozturk 14 and Jared Buntin 12 for the Cardinals, who win their second straight to improve to 5-8 overall. Phillips got 16 points from Chris Smetak and 14 from Danny Baratka but the Loggers fall to 4-6.

Northland Lutheran gets 19 points from Tim Venus and 18 from Maarten Colby to get past Rib Lake 72-68. Joe Frombach had 21 points for Rib Lake and Jordan Blomberg 13.

Edgar gets past Abbotsford 71-64 in a non-conference match-up. Will Hannemann had 23 points to lead four Wildcats in double figures. David Kornack had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Caden Untiedt added 13 points and Blake Lehman 12 for Edgar. Nathan Kunze scored 19 points for Abbotsford and Colten Voss chipped in with 15.
