Hockey: SPASH survives upset bid at East while Everest and Rapids also win in WVC
Two days after losing at the Marathon Park Ice Arena in overtime to Wausau West, the 9th ranked SPASH hockey team was right back in the same place Thursday night to face Wausau East in another Wisconsin Valley Conference match-up. Once again the Panthers were pressed but a pair of second period goals lifted SPASH to a 2-1 win over the Lumberjacks. East took the early lead as Henry Nuckles scored with 2:28 left in the first period. SPASH responded with second period goals from Mason Czaikowski and Jake Jaworski to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. That’s all goalie Nathan Siclovan would need as he got the win with 17 saves. East goalie Isaac Comfort made 30 stops.
D. C. Everest extends their win streak to five with a 6-2 win at Marshfield. Everest scored two goals in each of the periods with Chris Babiarz recording a hat trick for the Evergreens. Chris Sackmann, Bryce Dively, and Eli Jasurda also had goals for DCE while Andy Mahler made 16 saves. Marshfield got goals from Cole Irish and Jacob Twardowski.
Wisconsin Rapids scored all 8 goals in the first period and beat Merrill 8-0. Matt Edwards had three goals while Daniel Overfelt added a pair of goals for the Red Raiders.
Antigo topped Rhinelander 7-1.
