HS boys’ BB: Marathon, Auburndale stay perfect in front of Friday showdown plus other action
Marathon took charge early and never looked back as the Red Raiders roll past Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 75-23 in a game heard on Sports Fan 100.5 on Tuesday night. Collin Seubert had 15 points and Vince Dinkel 12 as Marathon led 22-6 after the first quarter and 34-13 at halftime. The Red Raiders’ bench then poured it on in the second half by outscoring the Royals 23-8 in the third quarter and 18-2 in the final eight minutes. Marathon improves to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Marawood-South while Assumption falls to 2-3 in the league and 4-5 overall.
Up next for Marathon is Auburndale. The Apaches stay tied with the Red Raiders atop the Marawood-South at 5-0 after beating Pittsville 55-33. Austin Hawkins eclipsed the 1000 point mark for his career with 14 points while Blake Anderson also had 14 points for Auburndale. Trail Pierce had 12 points for the Panthers, who fell to 3-2 in the conference and 5-4 overall. Friday night Auburndale travels to Marathon for a first place showdown that will be heard on Sports Fan 100.5 and espn1005.com starting with the pregame show at 7:10 p.m.
After losing their last three games by a total of 7 points, the Newman Catholic boys’ basketball team got over the hump by edging Stratford 39-38 on Tuesday in a game heard on 1230 The Voice. The Cardinals rallied from a four point deficit heading into the fourth quarter and held on when the Tigers’ Travis Urlaub missed a running lay-up attempt at the buzzer. Tolga Ozturk had 17 points for Newman, who improves to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the Marawood-South. Stratford got 14 points from Urlaub but falls to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
