HS hockey: West and Everest advance to Marathon Cup final plus other action
A late Mosinee rally comes up just short as Wausau West beat the Indians 3-2 in a Marathon Cup semifinal at the Greenheck Fieldhouse on Thursday night, a game heard on 1230 The Voice and 1230wxco.com. A first period goal by Zach Peterson and second period goals 54 seconds apart by Justin Anderson and Sheldon Oja put West up 3-0 heading into the third period. Mosinee then rallied behind their power play. Nick Nechuta and Alex Denfeld scored power play goals to pull the Indians within 3-2 with 5:21 to go. Mosinee had one final power play chance in the final 1:50 of the game but couldn’t get the equalizer. West improves to 4-3-1 overall and Mosinee is 4-3.
D. C. Everest also advances to Marathon Cup final with a 4-0 win over Wausau East. Brandon Dively had two goals for the Evergreens while Michael Plaza and Joe Patterson also scored. Andy Mahler had 20 saves to earn the shutout. East will meet Mosinee in the Marathon Cup consolation game Saturday at 5:30 while DCE and West hit the ice for the championship game after that.
Other hockey scores from Thursday:
Wisconsin Rapids 6 Marshfield 0
Pacelli/Assumption 8 Merrill 2
Tomahawk 4 Medford 1
