Pointer men stay unbeaten with rally past Augustana
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Clayton Heuer (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln/UW-Green Bay) scored a season-high 20 points as the UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team handed Augustana College its first loss of the season, 67-59.
UWSP (7-0) trailed 28-25 at halftime, but Heuer scored eight of the Pointers’ first nine points in the second half to knot the game at 34.
A three-pointer by Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) gave the Pointers a 37-34 advantage and UWSP held on to the lead for the rest of the game.
The Vikings (6-1) cut the UWSP lead to one point with just over seven minutes remaining in the second half, but a Heuer layup assisted by Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) started a 7-2 run to give the Pointers some breathing room.
The Pointers turned the ball over just seven times as the defense forced 17 Augustana turnovers.
Tillema finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Hass added 13 points.
The Pointers travel to UW-Whitewater Wednesday, Dec. 12 in a battle of unbeaten Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
