UWSP tennis team finishes fifth at WIAC Championships
MADISON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point tennis team played its way to a fifth-place finish in the seven-team field at the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Pointers accumulated eight team points, six at the championship and two for their regular-season record of 1-5.
Every Pointer recorded a win during the Championships.
Rachel Brown (Neenah, WI/St. Mary Central) finished in fourth place at No. 1 singles, winning her first round match up over UW-Oshkosh’s Preslee Nolte (7-5 and 7-5). Brown also recorded a fourth place finish at No. 1 doubles as her and Taylor Weuve (Green Bay, WI/Preble) won their first round match against UW-River Fall’s Jenny Paxton/Amanda Drangeid, 8-6.
Monica Preisig (Wausau, WI/West) won her first round match against UW-River Falls’ Kelsey Hochberger (7-5, 0-6, 6-3) on her way to a fourth place finish.
UW-Whitewater took home its sixth straight WIAC title and 13th in program history with 21 overall points. The Warhawks won all three doubles flights and five out of six of the singles on their way to the title.
UW-Whitewater, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse advance to the team tournament in the spring to determine the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Warhawks will host the four-team event.
Pointers Senior Alison Fortier was named to the 2012 WIAC All-Sportsmanship team. This is Fortier’s third consecutive year receiving the award.
